Why play doumbek?

Drumming in general is a lot of fun. Drumming can be almost meditative, and provides a great way to forget about the stress of your day. After drumming, I find I can focus better, and feel much more relaxed.

Doumbek is a particularly nice choice for drumming for a number of reasons. Firstly, doumbek is really portable. Doumbeks are relatively small and light compared to other drums. Some are easily small enough to take as a carry-on item on a plane.

Also, a doumbek has a wider variety of tones available to it than most drums.

And lastly, doumbeks are played with bare hands, not sticks. This means you don't have to worry about breaking or dropping sticks, or keeping track of them when you aren't playing. Plus, there is a different sort of a relationship to a drum when you use your bare hands rather than sticks. It feels more grounded and more connected, like the drum itself is a part of you, and not just the sticks.
